Burning Bright

Friday was a gorgeous day and I did not want it to get away from us without doing something with it. On the way home from work I dropped by the liquor store to pick out some wine. Taking the advice of the sales associate who was extremely excited about two particular bottle of wine, I checked out with one new red and one new white and headed home with hopes of spending some quality time outside with Ronnie.

He arrived shortly thereafter from getting the new addition to his large arm/shoulder tattoo, and was in considerable discomfort from the burning of his skin, and not the best mood. My hopes for a relaxing romantic evening together were starting to wane.

But once our carryout pizza dinner was eaten and Skyler was in bed, I was able to convince him to go out back and share one of the new bottles of wine. I tricked him into thinking we were actually being productive since we were also burning the dead sticks gathered from the yard in the fire pit. Add to it that the wine would take away the tattoo pain, and he was sold.

We ended up having one of the most enjoyably simple, romantic evenings we’ve had in a long time. I don’t remember the last time we just talked to get to know each other and spend time without the TV on or a toddler begging or dishes to do. While we watched the fire in the pit burn out, as cheesy as it sounds, I felt a fire between us spark up again. We may not always have sticks to burn, or wine to drink, but after Friday’s success, we’ve committed to find that time with each other more often to keep our own flame lit.
